EHPS-Net Summer School

In the summer of 2013, the European Historical Population Samples Network (EHPS-Net) and the Babeş-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) organized an International Summer School on Historical Demography.

From 31 May to 9 June 2013 the first EHPS-Net Summer School on Historical Demography took place at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). Twenty students from eight countries came to Cluj to improve their knowledge in the field. George Alter, Kees Mandemakers, Joshua Goldstein, Antoinette Fauve-Chamoux, Gunnar Thorvaldsen, Siegfried Gruber, Christa Matthys and Nynke van den Boomen taught about family systems, marriage, fertility, migration, epidemiologic transition, mortality, databases, life tables, etc. Here you can find the programme of the Summer School.

Being an introductory course, the summer school was open to graduate students, MA students, PhD candidates and PhDs, mainly from the historical sciences, but also from anthropology and education.

In general, both students and teachers were satisfied with this first version of the course. General opinion was that more emphasis should be laid on practice preferably by way of an elongation of the course. A definitive evaluation of the Summer School will take place in October 2013, during a meeting of Working Group 7 on Education.
